The 1969 Holden HK GTS 327 Monaro was originally designed and built with the intention of winning at Bathurst. Not only did the car go on to win at Bathurst in 1968, it also claimed pole position and the fastest lap of the race. Before any of this could happen though, Holden needed to sell some road going versions to homologate the car for racing use, which is where the GTS 327 was born.
This particular example was built by Holden at their Melbourne plant before being shipped over to New Zealand to be sold new through Hepburn Motors in Waimate on the 18th of March, 1969. The car was finished in code 1764 – Bright Blue Metallic with code 18Y Parchment interior. The car was purchased by the current owner in 1998 and by that stage it was a little run down and in need of a restoration to bring it back to its former glory. In the early 2000’s the car was stripped back to a bare shell in order to perform a full rotisserie restoration. Any necessary repairs were completed and with the car on the rotisserie, it was coated inside and out in its factory Bright Blue metallic by Spectrum Auto Refinishes in 2005. All of the chrome on the car was removed and triple plated along with all of the nuts and bolts being cad plated. The signature stripes and black outs were also put back on the car. Keeping with the factory look, the HK sits on a set of 6” wide steel wheels with new repro hubcaps all round and red striped tyres.
Inside the interior has also been completely refinished to a high standard. The dashboard and gauges were refinished back to new and the rest of the soft trim was recovered in Parchment vinyl. The dash retains the period correct radio in place however this is not currently functional.
Under the bonnet is a 327ci V8 engine that has been fully rebuilt. The engine was bored and received new rods, crank, ground pistons, ring, bearings, valve seats, guides, new cam, lifters and rockers. The engine was also balanced upgraded with electronic ignition, a Holley carb and new starter. The block is stamped with the correct original engine number however the owner has confirmed that he doesn’t believe it to be the original block to the car. The engine is paired to a four speed Saginaw transmission which was given a freshen up including new bearings 2004. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a factory 10 bolt differential. All of the suspension and brakes are rebuilt or reconditioned factory style items.
The car was imported from New Zealand back into Australia when the current owner moved here in late 2005. Since the restoration was completed the car has only travelled approximately 6,500 miles. Included with the sale of the car is a document from Hepburn Motors from when the car was resold in 1975 along with some photos on the car in the 70s and a Holden owner’s manual. These Bathurst HK Monaro’s are among the most collectible of the Aussie Muscle cars and great examples like this are certainly difficulty to obtain.
