This 1975 Holden HJ Sandman is a neatly restored example of an Aussie Icon. The Sandman panel van is one of those cars that defined the 70s here in Australia. The freedom that came along with driving where ever the road might take you and spending the night in the back of your van was something that really appealed to young Aussies.

This particular van began life at Holden’s Brisbane plant in Acacia Ridge, QLD. The van rolled off the production line on the 5th of December, 1975 before being sold new through H.C Dusting & Co in Burwood, NSW. The van left the factory finished in Jamacia Lime with Gazelle trim and running a 253ci V8 engine and four speed manual transmission. The current owner purchased the van in 2018 with it restored in the condition it is presented today. One of the best things about this car is that it is XX7 plated, something which was only done on Brisbane built cars to verify it as a genuine Sandman.

The body of the van has been fully repainted in a bright Metallic Green which is a modern twist on its original colour combination. The black Sandman details over the guards and across the tailgate have been refitted along with the appropriate paint black outs. A dual headlight Statesman front nose cone found its was onto the van at some stage as have rear side windows. The car sits on factory Sandman GTS wheels which have been widened in the rear.

Inside the car has been treated to a retrim with the colour changed to black with green stitching. The front bucket seats feature an embroidered Sandman logo with Holden crest on the headrests. The GTS style dash and console remain in place. The driving experience is improved thanks to factory power steering. In the back its neatly fitted without being over the top. There is a black mattress on the floor with some subtle curtains on the side windows.

Under the bonnet lives a 253ci V8 engine and while it would have left the factory this way, it is not believed to be the original to the car. The engine build features a mild cam, Holley Carb and MSD ignition system. The engine is paired to a four-speed manual transmission with new selector and clutch actuator. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory Salisbury diff with open centre and 3.08 gears. The suspension has been refurbished with new coil spring, new shocks and an upgraded sway bar. The brakes have been reconditioned front and rear.

The sale of the car come with a Holden Historical Services production report which confirms the Sandman’s original configuration and authenticity. Sandman Panel vans like this one are always popular, be sure to register and bid if you can see yourself out chasing sunsets in this one.
