This 1971 Ford Fairmont has been through a complete bare metal, rotisserie restoration into an extremely accurate replica of the GT-HO 1D race car campaigned at Bathurst in 1972 by Allan Moffat. The 1D car was a Ford factory works GT-HO built to defend the 1971 Victory and with Allan Moffat at the wheel, set a new lap record of 2:36.5 to sit on pole for the start of the 1972 Bathurst Hardie Ferodo 500.

This particular car began life in March of 1971 and left the factory as a factory V8 Fairmont finished in Limelight metallic with Saddle trim. During the build, the body of the car was completely stripped and taken back to bare metal before being placed on a rotisserie. The body was good but any necessary repairs were undertaken before the body was completely repainted inside and out in the signature colour of Vermillion Fire. The correct GT black outs were applied as were the GT specific items like grille, spotlights, bonnet, shaker, mirrors and stripes. The car was fitted with exact replica decals that are accurate to the original race car even with the duct tape style spot light covers. As per 1972 spec, the car was intentionally left without the front chin spoiler and rear boot spoiler as that’s how they were raced that year. It should be noted that while the car still presents extremely well, over the years the car has developed some pin head style blistering in the paintwork and while they are so small that you might overlook them in the pics, they are present around the car. There is a race spec side exit exhaust system and the car sits on a set of 1972 date coded 15” Globe wheels with white lettered tyres.

Inside the car has also been refinished to be accurate to the race car. As the car was built to do both street duties and some track work, there is a CAMS approved six point roll cage fitted with side intrusion bars. Rather than carpets, the floors were painted in Vermillion fire to match the exterior as this is how the race cars were finished. The seats, door trims and dash were all refinished back to GT factory specs in black.

Under the bonnet of the beast lives a professionally built, 380hp 351ci Cleveland V8 engine. The engine features 2V heads with 4V valves, 4MA crank, fully balanced, GT-HO sump, Crow cam, Scorcher twin point dizzy and is topped with a 750cfm Holley carb. The car makes a mighty rumble through a twin 3” exhaust with 4 into 1 extractors and side exit pipes.

The engine is paired to a four speed Top loader transmission with GT tail shaft and power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff with 3.25 ratio LSD and 31 spline Moser solid billet axles.  There is a GT-HO vacuum tank and brake booster along with GT-HO finned drums. The rear springs are genuine six leaf GT-HO rear springs with Koni adjustable shock absorbers. The front features GT-HO upper control arms with 16.1 ratio steering box.

Since completion the car has been street registered in NSW, VIC and QLD. The car has been shown at a number of events including Motor Classica and features in the 2009 Muscle Car Masters. Included with the sale is a photo album that documents the rebuild of the car. The car is a bunch of fun to drive and would make for a great weekend cruiser to take out to cars and coffee or a pretty serious track day warrior.
