This 1965 Mercedes Benz 220se Coupe is a beautiful example of a classic European luxury cruiser. These cars are extremely desirable with collectors today and this car has been neatly restored and is extremely well presented.

The W111 chassis Mercedes Benz coupes were some of the last of the hand built Merc’s and are widely considered to be one of the most beautiful designs ever to leave the factory. Of the 14,173 220 SE Coupe’s built only 776 of those were right hand drive and only 214 were sent to Australia from new like this example that was delivered new through York Motors in Sydney. The car has been with the current owner for approximately 8 years and only driven sparingly during that time.

The body of the car has been fully repainted in its original white colour. During the repaint, a few minor spots of rust were removed with new metal welded in their place. The rear floor foot wells also received some rust repairs with the whole floor and tunnel painted with POR15 and then lined with sound deadener. With the body neatly coated in white, the front and rear bumpers were both replaced with new chrome. During reassembly the car was fitted with new rubber seals to the boot and rear window as well as fuzzy felts to all the window channels. The pillarless body style with wrap around rear window if one of the most outstand features of these Mercs. The exterior look is completed with a set of factory steel wheels and hubcaps wrapped in brand new white wall tyres.

Inside the car has been completely refinished in red leather. We are told that three and a half Italian leather hides were used in the retrim. The only section of the car not covered in leather is the headliner up top. The trim pattern is factory style with bucket seats up front and the correct perforations in the seats. The steering wheel was left original for a bit of old school charm but could easily be restored to new if you wanted to do so. The walnut timber used around the interior adds a touch of class especially when combined with the leather. An important piece inside if the newly refurbished original radio which is fully functional and not a replica like you often see in these.

Under the bonnet is the original 2.2L straight six cylinder engine. The fuel injection system was rebuilt during the current ownership. The engine is paired to the factory four speed automatic transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory diff. The brakes are discs up front and drums rear which have been fully rebuilt including new master cylinder and all new lines. The suspension has also been gone through with a bunch or replacement parts as required.

These W111 Mercedes Benz coupes are hugely desirable luxury European classic cruisers. This one is a rare Australian delivered example and has been neatly restored inside and out. Be sure to register and bid if you want to see this beauty parked in your garage.
