1974 FORD FALCON XB GS COUPE

This is a fantastic example of a fully restored, 1974 Ford Falcon XB GS Hardtop. The car is restored with its matching numbers 302 ci V8 and automatic transmission, in its original colour combo of Red Pepper with White trim. The car was purchased by the current owner three years ago from Mendooran, NSW (Just outside of Dubbo) where the car had sat unregistered for 16 years in a couple’s back yard. The car had been repainted black at some stage with black painted interior trim, but the tags showed it had some serious potential and the original engine and trans were still in place. Being a passionate car guy, he couldn’t leave the car there and decided to bring it home and bring it back to life with a full resto.

The XB was subsequently stripped back to bare metal to assess the repairs. The car did require a few of the usual rust repairs. The inner and outer sills, plenum, along with lower guards (inside and out) required some repairs that were all completed. The factory bonnet was in good condition and remains on car. The driver’s side quarter panel did have a minor rub and had to be straightened out prior to paint but the passenger side was good to go. Once the repairs were completed, the car was completely repainted back to its original Red Pepper colour with a new GS stripe applied. All the work was professionally completed to a high level and the owner tells us an inspection using a paint gauge would show there is virtually no filler in the car.

Like the outside, the interior was completely refinished with trim supplied by Reid McInnes of Muscle Car Interiors. The car received new carpets, seat covers, door trims, headlining and a rear parcel shelf. Back window and rear quarter windows are original items with the front windscreen and front window being replaced with new items.

Mechanically, the original matching numbers engine has been fully rebuilt back to factory specification. There is a new carburettor, distributor, alternator, power steering pump and radiator. The engine is paired to the original transmission which has been serviced, with front and rear oil seals replaced while it was out. The diff is the standard Falcon diff which received new oil seals and an oil change. The brakes have been gone over and are all new including a new master cylinder. The power steering box was a second-hand item that was fully reconditioned, and the car has had a wheel alignment to make sure it drives straight down the road.

This is absolutely a fresh restoration with only 10kms or so travelled since completion. The owner enjoyed the build of the car but suffered a recent health scare which meant he’s re-evaluated his priorities in life and has decided to sell the car while it is at its best. These hardtop Falcons are always popular cars and this one being a matching numbers 302 ci V8 GS is certainly a desirable one.
