This 1969 Ford Falcon XW GT has been restored over a number of years. The car was originally sold through Duhig Ford in North Essendon, Victoria. The car remained in Victoria for most of its early life before being sold to a gent in North QLD in 1994. The car changed hands twice more in Atherton and Townsville where the previous owner had it for 14 years. The current owner purchased the car last year as a nice tidy driver car that had been fully repainted six years prior.
The current owner pulled the car apart and decided to bring the rest of the car up to match the shiny new paintwork. He put a bunch of work into the car rebuilding the underside and engine bay, bringing it back up to factory spec. The body presents well in Candy Apple Red with iconic black out hood and Gold GT stripe down the side. All of the GT gear you would expect is in place including bonnet pins, spot lights, hood scoop, front spoiler, GT mirrors and black outs. To complete the look, the original twelve slot wheels were restored with new dress rings and centre caps and wrapped with red striped tyres.
Inside the car has also been refinished to factory specs. The interior was treated to new seat trim front and rear, new door cards along with correct reproduction seat belts. The dash was good the way it was so remained in place, as did the headliner. Front and centre lives a new correct style reproduction rim blow steering wheel. The rear window wears a period venetian blind as a cool accessory.
Under the bonnet is a 351ci Windsor V8 engine which lives in a neatly detailed engine bay to factory specs. While the engine is stamped with a number that matches the tower, it isn’t believed to be original to the car. The owner tried to use as much of the original parts in the engine bay as he could rather than going for repro items. The engine is paired to a C4 automatic transmission and power is fed to the rear wheels through a nine inch diff. The underside of the car is neatly detailed and presents well all round. The suspension and brakes were gone through because the car had been standing for some time during its previous ownership with everything replaced that it needed to be safe and reliable as a driver.
When the car arrived here for sale, we put it through an independent inspection with ICAARS to go over the authenticity. During the inspection, it was discovered that while the car did wear the correct tower stamping, and tag, the radiator support stamping had been redone. Further investigation discovered that the car has been rebodied at some stage in its life. The rebody appears to have gone to into great detail with it taking a camera down the frame rails to uncover clues about it’s past. These cars all have a story, they aren’t new anymore and lots of things happened over the years. While it doesn’t change the ownership experience, or how good the car is, it does affect its value in the collector market and is extremely important that it is disclosed to potential buyers when they change hands. While disappointing for the current owner, who purchased the car as a correct GT, he has adjusted his reserve to suit this new information which allows someone to purchase a nice XW GT at a lower price than they would have to pay if it didn’t have that history. The sale of the car comes complete letter from Ford confirming original specification and some early registration certificates and paperwork.
