This 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 396 Convertible has been through an extensive ground up concours style restoration. The car is matching numbers, retaining its original 396ci ‘Turbo-Jet’ big block V8 engine which is paired to a two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission.
The car underwent an extensive factory restoration by Custom Cars Unlimited in Le Grange, Illinois. There is documentation with the car with receipts for just shy of $175,000 USD for the work performed. The body on the car has all been professionally refinished to a very high standard. The car was fully repainted in its factory metallic turquoise colour during the resto. The chrome work and stainless trims on the car have all been either refinished or replaced. The car sits on a set of factory steel wheels with correct SS hubcaps.
The interior is as highly restored as the outside of the car in its factory matching two-tone turquoise. Being an SS, naturally there are bucket seats up front with a automatic floor shifter poking up from the centre console. Everything is refurbished from the carpets to the brand-new power convertible top with glass rear window. There is a matching turquoise tonneau cover to keep everything neat and tidy while the top is folder back. The boot is lined with the correct style speckle spray with boot mat and spare wheel. The underside of the boot lid has the correct jacking instructions and sticker with working light.
Pop the hood and you will see a factory look engine bay housing the matching number 396ci V8 engine. The engine is paired to a two speed Powerglide automatic transmission. The engine is all neatly painted and presented like it has just left the factory floor. Even the underside of the hood is neatly presented with factory style heat shield in place. Period correct wiring along with hose and battery clamps show the high level of attention to detail. The same level of detail extends to the undercarriage of the car when you can see that every nut and bolt was redone during the restoration.
The car was imported to Australia following the restoration in 2011 where it was shown at Motorclassica. At the time of importation, the car was indicating only 243 miles since the restoration and has only travelled another 4,000 or so in the last ten years. A big block SS Impala convertible is a dream car for many enthusiasts but to have one restored to this level is something completely different again. If you are looking for one of the nicest restored Impala convertibles in the country, you have come to the right place.
