This 1976 Holden SL/R 5000 was built in Holden’s Dandenong plant in Victoria, rolling off the production line on the 15th of June, 1976. The car was a factory 2214 code Tuxedo Black with 60A code Chamois interior and ran an L31, 308ci V8 engine and a M21 four speed manual transmission. The car was sold new through Peter Robinson Motors in Lilydale, Victoria in late June, 1976.
It is believed to have remained in Victoria for most of its early years. The car was purchased by the previous owner in 1995 from the Dandenong Ranges. The car was fairly run down by this stage, the paint had seen better days, flares had been added at some stage and there were a few dents and some surface rust starting to show through. He couldn’t afford to restore it at the time so it was laid up in his father’s garage where it stayed for the next 13 years. In 2008, the car was pulled from the garage and sent to a body shop to being the extensive process of pulling the car back to a bare shell. Once it was apart, the panel work could commence and while the shell wasn’t really bad, it still needed its fair share of repairs in order to bring it back to its former glory. In May of 2009 the car was repainted its signature and rare factory colour of Tuxedo Black with La Plata silver ‘blackouts’. The decision was made to keep the flares and the car now sits over a set of 15” aftermarket GTS style wheels.
The interior has been completely refinished back to factory in its original colour of Chamois. The interior is restored to a factory presentation with the exception of a Pioneer stereo that has been neatly mounted into the dash with speakers up on the rear parcel shelf. Everything from the carpets to the headliner inside the car has been refinished.
Under the bonnet, the original L31 engine received the full treatment including completely dipped and stripped, new pistons, rings, cam, balancing, heads modified for unleaded fuel, manifold cleaned and welded, crank ground, new water pump and balancer. Care was also taken when they decked the block to avoid the original stamped numbers as the owner didn’t want them have to be re-stamped. The transmission was upgraded some time ago from a M21 to a four speed manual, Borg Warner Super T10 which remains in the car. Power is fed to the rear wheels via a 2.78 ratio Banjo limited slip differential. The suspension and brakes were all refurbished during the restoration.
The car is sold with a report from Holden Historical Services confirming the original configuration of the car. Rarely does the opportunity present itself to purchase a genuine, Tuxedo Black, matching numbers SL/R 5000 Torana, register and bid now or live with the regret.
