The Holden HQ SS was launched to create a budget style entry into the Holden performance car range. It was based on the bottom of the line Belmont Sedan but with a 253ci V8 and a 4 speed manual transmission jammed into it. The cars were visually identifiable by the SS stripes and being one of three colours, Lettuce Alone (green), Infra Red or in this case, Ultra Violet.
Holden initially planned to produce 1600 of the cars but demand quickly showed that they under shot the mark by a mile and ordered another 1200 to be produced in a second run. Even then, demand was high and people were lucky to get their hands on one new from the dealer.
This particular example was one of the first production run of cars. Built in GMH’s Acacia Ridge plant in Brisbane rolling off the production line on the 21 of September, 1972 before being sold new by Barkly Motors in Oxley, QLD in the same month. The current QLD based owner purchased the car about 2 and a half years ago our of country Victoria where he believe it made its way to early in its life. The way the car is presented today is the same way it would have rolled off the line, ordered in Ultra Violet with Black Houndstooth trim.
The body of the car has been professionally repainted in its original colour approximately 2 years ago. The factory SS black outs and decals were reapplied and all of the alloy trim was repolished and sealed. The front and rear bumpers as well as the side mirrors were replaced with new items. The car sits on a set of original GTS style wheels.
Inside the car has the correct Black with houndstooth style trim with bucket seats and correct GTS dash with unique SS steering wheel. The carpets were removed with all new insulation applied to the floor prior to new carpet being put down. The front seats had the covers removed and were refoamed before refitting the original covers which were in good shape. The four door trims were replaced with new items.
Under the bonnet lives a non-matching number 253ci V8 engine. It is believed the engine has been rebuilt prior to the current ownership with mild cam, hydraulic lifters and a four barrel Quadrajet carb. As they all were from factory, the engine is backed by a M20 4 speed manual gearbox which was professionally rebuilt 6 months ago. Power is fed to the rear wheels through the factory Salisbury diff which was also recently rebuilt with limited slip, 3.08 ratio centre. The suspension has been upgraded to include Koni adjustable shocks all round. The brake components have been fully reconditioned front and rear.
The sale of the car comes with the production report from Holden Historical Services confirming it as a true SS. Prices of these car have climbed steeply over the last few years with no signs of dropping off. Grab yourself one of these great Aussie classics before they become out of reach.
